Mulitmodal Discourse Analysis ALLAB Lab CH Seminar Dr. Nashwa AlYamany + Dr. Noor Al-Yasin Dina El-Dakhs Presentation (1): CSI: Crime Scene Investigation (2002–2015) marks a paradigm shift in the post-9/11 forensic visual culture, ostensibly presenting physical evidence as a system of surveillance and control; the team of criminalists as ideologically complicit with state power; and high-tech forensic gadgetry as infallible and conducive to the culprit. In the melodramatic narrative strands, sophisticated plotlines, and spectacular performances of forensic science, CSI heavily rests on a novel and meticulously elaborated aesthetics that redefines the conception of gaze and camera shot in the weaving of episodes across the different seasons. A more nuanced comprehension of CSI’s visual forensic discourse is, therefore, necessitated to fully understand the cultural significance of these offerings. Extending the work of Kress and Van Leuween on the systems of gaze and social distance in light of the Foucauldian and post-panoptic views on power and control, the article introduces fine-grained taxonomies of the forensic gaze and camera shot as fundamental aesthetics closely tied to post-9/11 extensive surveillance discourse. Resituating CSI in the broader context of the post-panopticon, the study argues that the drama series operates in a hybrid surveillance mode that surpasses conventional readings of panopticism, straddling the line between the physical and the digital in the contemporary age. Presentation (2): The present study applies a multimodal analysis to female Disney characters in Disney animated movies. It studies the evolution of female Disney characters’ linguistic and visual features over the last three decades: 1990-1999, 2000-2009 and 2010-2019. The researcher analyzes nine Disney animated movies (three most popular movies from each decade). The researcher adopts Lakoff’s forms of women’s language and Fairclough’s three-dimensional framework of CDA to study female Disney characters’ linguistic features while Kress and van Leeuwen’s X-ray view of analyzing visual image is followed as the general approach to multimodality. Finally, Goffman’s framework of women portrayal is applied to study the visual features. The quantitative analysis reveals that, regardless of the time the movie is released in, the linguistic features that mostly characterize female Disney characters’ language are hypercorrect grammar, super polite forms and hedges. They reflect the sexist stereotypicality of women’s language being slang-free and polite. The results also imply that female Disney characters are portrayed as women who have their stereotypical lexicon. Despite the fact that there is a decrease in number of linguistic features studied, used from the first decade to the second and third decades, the differences in numbers are insignificant. The qualitative analysis suggests that, regardless of the decade, female Disney characters use these stereotypical linguistic features quite similarly. Moreover, the qualitative analysis reveals that body image of Disney princesses has changed over time. It transitioned from an unrealistic body type with large breasts and tiny waist to a realistic body type with logical body proportions. Furthermore, over the years, their hair started to look more realistic and it goes through natural factors, such as water, wind and sleep. This implies a change in how females should perceive the image of their bodies where the lack of large breasts and tiny waistline does not imply lack of beauty. 10/4/2021 8:00:00 PM Public (42)

The Distinctiveness of Emotion Words ALLAB Lab CH Invited Speaker Dr. Dina El-Dakhs King Saud University - Department of English Language and Literature Empirical evidence has recently been provided for the distinctiveness of emotion words as compared to abstract and concrete words for monolinguals, calling for a reconsideration of the relation between emotion and language. The present study investigates whether the distinctiveness of emotion words among monolinguals holds for foreign language learners. To this end, three groups (n=120 per group) of late Arabic-English bilinguals who learned English as a foreign language completed tasks including free recall, rating, and discrete word association. One group completed the tasks in Arabic while the other two groups, representing two levels of foreign language exposure, completed the tasks in English. Planned comparisons indicated the distinctiveness of emotion words in the participants’ first and foreign languages in the free recall and rating tasks while no significant differences were found in the word association task. The results are discussed in light of the existing literature and relevant theoretical models. 10/10/2021 10:00:00 AM 20 KSU students who study Psycholinguistics
Remediation of Literary Icons of Evil into Superheroes LDSHRG Group CH Publishing an Open Source Digital Platform Dr. Orchida Fayez Omeka website: https://omeka.org/ By creating a publishable platform embodying the remediation of four classic characters of evil, there is an assimilation of the established media entities which have monopolized media production before the advent of the internet. This is reflected in the current power given to the audience to interact with, manipulate, create and even publish media expressions inspired by the classic characters. The purpose of the project is to initiate interest in the use of DH tools that are both dynamic and sustainable in displaying various media modes that draw from each other while evolving into separate entities. The model references oral folktales, written texts, paintings, movies, and social media Memes. Thus, it reveals a poststructuralist view that breaks away from an original work of art into a fluidity allowing for the monstrous to persist as a representation of the horrors lurking in every era, or transform into something amiable, comic or even heroic. https://transtextuality.omeka.net/ 8/31/2021 12:00:00 AM Researchers, educators, students … etc.

How to Manage the World's Most Valuable Resource: DATA, Data Security:Hands-On Workshop AIDA Lab CCIS Workshop Dr.Rabia Latif Dr.Tanzila Saba In data/ information security, a buffer overflow is an anomaly where a program, while writing data to a buffer, overruns the buffer's boundary and overwrites adjacent memory locations. Buffers are areas of memory set aside to hold data, often while moving it from one section of a program to another, or between programs. Buffer overflows can often be triggered by malformed inputs; if one assumes all inputs will be smaller than a certain size and the buffer is created to be that size, then an anomalous transaction that produces more data could cause it to write past the end of the buffer. If this overwrites adjacent data or executable code, this may result in erratic program behavior, including memory access errors, incorrect results, and crashes. The workshop focuses on how to handle buffer flow attack with hands-on practical and examples. 10/11/2021 12:00:00 PM PSU & Community

Generalized results to study the existence of solutions of Caputo fractional boundary value problems TAS Lab DES Seminar Dr. Imran Talib Dr. Nabil Mliki In this talk, the generalized results will be presented to study the existence of solutions of generalized Caputo fractional differential equations with generalized nonlinear boundary conditions. The presented approach unifies the existence criteria of various fractional boundary value problems that have been previously studied on a case-by-case basis in the literature. The common feature is that the solution of each fractional boundary value problem lies in a sector defined by well-ordered coupled lower and upper solutions. The tools we use are the lower and upper solutions approach along with some results of fixed point theory. Some examples will be presented to demonstrate the applicability of the proposed approach. 10/26/2021 12:15:00 PM CHS

Using BaaS and microservices technologies to secure IoT environments SEL Lab CCIS Talk Mrs. Daniah Hasan CYS Club under the supervision of SEL Lab IoT applications have extended new concepts to smart technologies in different vital sectors such as healthcare, education, agriculture, energy management and control, etc. IoT aims to interconnect several intelligent devices over the Internet to control, store, exchange, and analyze collected data. However, the main problem in IoT environments is that they present numerous potential vulnerabilities that can be the origin of security attacks. In this context, in this work proposes a novel framework, named SUBLµME, which stands for SecUre BLockchain as a service and µservices-based fraMework for IoT Environments. This framework integrates BaaS and microservices technologies that have the predominant characteristic of offering reusable and reconfigurable security features implemented as independent services that can be reused for multiple IoT applications. SUBLµME is implemented and validated by a simulated smart home environment. The results of the simulation experiments showed that SUBLµME brings several security improvements in terms of performance, data integrity, data packages’ validation, access control, and efficient and secure data transmission and storage. 10/24/2021 12:00:00 PM PSU students and faculty members

Machine Learning: it can't get any easier than this AIDA Lab CCIS Organizing a Workshop Dr. Khaled Almustafa Dr. Rehman Khan Machine Learning (ML) Applications are one of the most interesting topics nowadays among the Artificial Intelligence (AI) research community, it can get a bit complicated for some of us, since we have no deep background or in-depth knowledge about such an important topic, but there are many easy to use tools to give us a chance to contribute to this interesting area of research with build in, and ready to use tools, such as WEKA solution. He introduced the solution, and most of its functionality in order to demonstrate a fair understanding of a common classification problem using different, well known, and widely used ML classification algorithms, and such an exercise was done on a selected bioinformatic dataset. Then he introduced a feature selection method for the features of the used dataset for different classifiers to evaluate the classifiers performance with the selected features, and compare it with the original classification. Some sensitivity analysis on selected classifiers' parameters were discussed in order to see if there is an enhancement of the classifier performance with respect to these parameters. By the end of these sessions, the attendees got the idea of the required skills to come up with a reasonable publishable work. The applications of AI in industry were discussed, followed by a technical workshop. 11/15/2021 12:00:00 PM Open to Community

An Introductory Workshop on Data Analytics for Lean Six Sigma (WIDS) AIDA Lab CCIS Organizing a Workshop Ms.Saima Rashid Dr.Tanzila Saba Six Sigma is a data driven methodology to improve the quality of a process (i.e. any repetitive business function) by reducing the variation around the mean of the process. In other words, it ensures that the process falls within the acceptable tolerance range (as far as possible). In theory, a perfect score in Six Sigma is 6. This would mean that 99.7% of all data points fall within the tolerance range. However, in practice, a good sigma score depends upon the dynamics of the particular process in question. At the end of this workshop the participants would be able to understand the basic data analysis and interpretation of the data gathered within a DMAIC project. The emphasis will be on use of data analytics tools and the interpretation of the outcome. Interactive activities and many different examples from actual Lean Six Sigma projects will be used to illustrate all tools. Hour 1: Data and Lean Six Sigma Hour 2: Introduction to testing Hour 3: Regression Analysis 3/8/2021 5:00:00 PM Open to Community

IDC Women Transforming Technology Summit 2021 AIDA Lab CCIS Symposium Summit Speakers IDC Diversity is a hot topic in the tech industry — and because it’s discussed frequently, it might be easy to feel like things have already changed. However, the momentum is still too slow in this region. Women remain largely underrepresented in STEM roles at about half that of male representation. Female participation in IT is about 35% with less than 18% in managerial roles. Compounding the problem, IDC research found that 51% of employers in the region are accelerating their digitalization agenda and 60% of employers intend to accelerate the automation of processes. These changes are likely to do away with a set of roles that are increasingly redundant in the new future of work— and accelerate the creation of new roles. The distribution of female roles in IT is highly skewed towards the roles that will become automated. 11/11/2021 9:00:00 AM Open to all

The 4th International Conference on Machine Learning and Intelligent Systems,2021 AIDA Lab CCIS Invited Speaker Dr.Tanzila Saba MLIS2021 Organizing Committee, Xiamen, China In various fields, the internet of things (IoT) gains a lot of popularity due to its autonomous sensors operations with the least cost. In medical and healthcare applications, the IoT devices develop an ecosystem to sense the medical conditions of the patients' such as blood pressure, oxygen level, heartbeat, temperature, etc. and take appropriate actions on an emergency basis. Using it, the healthcare-related data of patients is transmitted towards the remote users and medical centers for post-analysis. Different solutions have been proposed using Wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) to monitor the medical status of the patients based on low powered biosensor nodes, however, preventing increased energy consumption and communication costs are demanding and interesting problems. The issue of unbalanced energy consumption between biosensor nodes degrades the timely delivery of the patient's information to remote centers and gives a negative impact on the medical system. Moreover, the sensitive data of the patient is transmitting over the insecure Internet and prone to vulnerable security threats. Therefore, data privacy and integrity from malicious traffic are another challenging research issue for medical applications. 11/10/2021 5:00:00 PM Open to all

Analysis of factors influencing slope stability under heavy rainfall S&M Lab CE Journal Editorial Board Musa Adamu Advances in Civil Engineering-Hindawi In order to study the influence of heavy rainfall on slope stability, select four influencing factors such as average annual rainfall q, soil permeability coefficient anisotropy kr, water table height hw, and suction friction angle φb as variables, and use gray relation analysis to conduct sensitivity analysis on the influencing factors of slope stability under the effect of heavy rainfall, and then analyze the influence of each influencing factor on pore water pressure (PWP) and safety factor (Fs) of slope under heavy rainfall. During the rainfall process, the PWP growth rate at the top of the slope is faster than that at the bottom of the slope; for the same monitoring point at the bottom of the slope, the larger q and kr, the smaller hw, the faster it reaches saturation. The Fs of the slope is inversely related to q and positively related to hw and φb, Fs will decrease when kr increases or decreases. 12/2/2022 3:21:00 PM Researchers, Industries, students and community
Study on Influence of Fly Ash Properties on the Preparation of High Strength Concrete S&M Lab CE Journal Editorial Board Dr Musa Adamu Advances in Civil Engineering-Hindawi A thermal power plant is a powerhouse in which prime mover is steam, which produces fly ash as waste product. In coal-based power plant the huge quantity of fly ash produced, sometimes being as much as 30 - 35 % of total coal burnt in a day with approximately 80% produced fly ash used in cement production, brick manufacturing, backfilling, cement replacement in concrete etc. At present, there is a lot of problems in disposal of fly ash in power plants, so it is very essential for us to make efficient consumption in available fields like cement production, concrete manufacturing etc, also to tackle the space constraint problem for disposal. In the present study, we have concentrated towards the application of fly ash in high strength concrete by replacing cement and found good results by the use/interpretation of silica fume. As compressive strength and flexural strength values has been analyzed after mixing of Fly Ash and silica fume in place of cement. Also, the durability of concrete has been analyzed by detail analysis of corrosion resistivity and evaluated the results of corrosion rate in concrete after mixing of Fly ash in the given mix design 2/28/2022 2:15:00 PM Researchers, Students, Industries and Community

Effect of Sulphonated Naphthalene Formaldehyde (SNF) superplasticizer on the mechanical and durability properties of concrete produced using locally sourced fine aggregate from Ghana S&M Lab CE Journal Editorial Board Dr Musa Adamu Advances in Civil Engineering-Hindawi The use of superplasticizers is very uncommon in many developing countries. However, its inclusion in concrete is known to enhance the mechanical and durability properties of concrete. There is a yawning gap in terms of literature on the performance of Sodium Naphthalene Formaldehyde (SNF) superplasticizers in concrete, especially in the sub-Saharan construction industry where the quality of aggregates used in production is questionable. In this study, two batches of concrete produced with locally sourced pit sand, with characteristic strength of 30 MPa were produced. One batch was without the SNF superplasticizer to serve as a control, whereas the other batch was made with the incorporation of the superplasticizer. The fresh properties in terms of slump and air content and the hardened properties in terms of compressive and flexural strength, elastic and dynamic moduli were investigated. Further, durability indicators comprising of sorption, water absorption, sorptivity, chloride penetration, electrical surface resistivity, and acid attack were investigated. The results from the study indicated that the inclusion of SNFs improves workability and restricts the movement of ions in concrete due to lesser interconnected pores. Moreover, concrete containing SNF superplasticizers protects the overall concrete much better from acid attack than those without SNF superplasticizers 3/1/2022 4:31:00 PM Researchers, students and Industries

Study on the Lateral Torsional Buckling of Composite Thin-Walled Beam S&M Lab CE Conference Dr. Abdul Aabid Faculty of Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Brunei Aircraft structures are made of thin-walled structures as it provides higher strength to weight ratio compared to solid sections. Thin-walled structures provides greater strength but it is prone to buckling due to its low stiffness and slenderness of the individual element. One of the types of buckling that can impact the integrity of a thin-walled beam is lateral torsional buckling which is caused by simultaneous lateral bending and twisting of the cross sections and it happens before the beam's material strength is reached. Therefore the design of such thin-walled structure should ensure that the applied load on a structure does not surpass the critical buckling load. Moreover, modern aircraft structures are made of laminated composites to achieve higher specific stiffness and specific strength. Thus in this work, an analysis on the lateral torsional buckling of composite thin-walled beam is performed to evaluate the critical buckling load of an cantilever beam. ANSYS is used to find the critical buckling load of a composite thin-walled beam and the results obtained from numerical method are compared with previous analytical studies. Finally parametric study is conducted for different layup stacking sequence and dimensions of the beam to find the best layup for to achieve the highest critical buckling load. 12/11/2021 5:00:00 AM Student, Researcher and Staff

DHSI 2022: Open Digital Collaborative Project Preservation in the Humanities LDSHRG Group CH Conference Dr. Orchida Fayez DHSI2022 - Victoria University, Victoria, Canada Presentation: Orchida Fayez (Prince Sultan University) @drorchida “Memes: Digital-born repositories of human expression” Memes offer rich material reflecting the dynamics of the collective and personalized human expression on the internet. For researchers, it is a rich documentation of data, both qualitative and quanitative. However, memes are digital-born and are subject to the same fragile attributes shared by digital creations that do not have a reflection in the physical world. Spaces, where memes thrive, are governed by a crucial factor for their sustainability: audience interaction. Memes can go viral with certain trends, then either evolve with new reflections or disappear altogether. Coming from a place where physical archives and repositories are safely preserved in the physical sense, a digital realm that is flexible, chaotic, and fragile becomes a challenge for researchers. The presentation proposes acknowledging the unique nature of the digital world that is better conceptualized within deconstructionist interpretations of Derrida’s Trace and Foucault’s rebellion. Moreover, it frames human/technology interaction that is both hermeneutic and embodied, from Don Ihde’s post phenomenological analysis. The result yields a research perspective that frames memes as collaborative representations of cultural human expression that draw upon both the collective and the personalized. 6/7/2022 7:30:00 PM DHSI conference attendees

Recent Developments in Inductive Machine Learning and its Applications ASSCL CCIS Seminar Prof. Mehmet Sabih Aksoy Prof. Ahmad Taher Azar and Prof. Mohamed Tounsi Inductive Learning, also known as Concept Learning, is how A.I. systems attempt to use a generalized rule to carry out observations. Inductive Learning are used to generate a set of classification rules. These generated rules are in the "If this, then that" format. These rules determine the state of an entity at each iteration step in Learning and how the Learning can be effectively changed by adding more rules to the existing ruleset. When the output and examples of the function are fed into the A.I. system, inductive Learning attempts to learn the function for new data. 3/27/2022 2:03:00 PM Students, researchers and faculty members

14th annual International Conference on Education and New Learning Technologies S&M Lab CE Conference Prof. Yasser Mansour IATED There is a trend in the world seeking program accreditation to assure achieving high-quality standards and achieving the objectives and goals of the program that were set before offering the program to students. The objective of this proposal is to present an assessment tool to assess the readiness of academic programs to go through academic program accreditation. This assessment tool is generic and can be used by program leaders or a reviewer to assess any academic program in any country. In order to cover different aspects of the program, six standards are considered. These standards are mission and goals, program management quality assurance, teaching and learning, students, teaching staff, learning resources, facilities, and equipment. Each standard is to be assessed according to specific criteria. There is a rubric to clearly determine which category defines the practice. Based on the score of the academic program in each practice in substandard/standard, recommendations are presented to enhance the quality of this standard/substandard. Also, evidence is suggested for program leaders to look for or to develop in order to support the quality enhancement. Finally, relevant KPIs are suggested to monitor the program progress in each standard/substandard. 7/4/2022
Special Issue "Construction Materials and Artificial Intelligence" S&M Lab CE Journal Editorial Board Prof. Yasser Mansour MDPI Dear Colleagues, Concrete is the most widely used building material in construction industries. It is characterized by high strength and good durability. In contrast, normal concrete exhibits poor deformability and low compression toughness, which affects its ability to withstand dynamic loads. These deficiencies limit the application of concrete in various civil engineering structures that endure dynamic loads, such as mechanical platforms and airport pavements. In order to overcome these drawbacks, various admixtures/additives, such as nanomaterials (nanosilica, silica fumes, carbon nanotubes, etc.) crumb rubber, natural and synthetic fibers, and polymer materials, which include polyurethane, epoxy resin polyethylene, etc., have been incorporated into concrete to modify its properties. Moreover, the properties of concrete, such as its mechanical properties, dynamic-load-bearing capabilities, and durability, are improved as a result of these admixtures. However, economical and efficient techniques are required to comprehensively evaluate concrete performance due to the variety in the compositions. Therefore, using artificial intelligent (AI) through the application of soft computing/classical models such as artificial neural network (ANNs), support vector machines (SVMs), multilinear regression (MLR), Adaptive Neuro-fuzzy Inference Systems (ANFISs), Extreme Learning Machines (ELMs), Gaussian regression processes (GPRs), and ensemble models, including Random Forest, XGBoost, etc., are employed. Special Issue "Sustainable Materials for Construction and Building" S&M Lab CE Journal Special Issue Dr Musa Adamu & Prof Yasser E. Ibrahim Applied Sciences Journal The world is now focusing on moving towards a sustainable environment. To achieve a sustainable environment, there is need to utilize sustainable materials. In the construction industry, the development of sustainable materials is still a major challenge even though several measures have been introduced so as to reduce the CO2 and greenhouse gas emissions associated with cement and concrete production. This is because cement is the most environmentally unfriendly and expensive constituent material, with its production process amounting to about 10% of the global CO2 emissions. This led to the use of different materials which have both pozzolanic and or cementitious properties as cement replacement materials in cementitious composites such as concrete and mortar. Additionally, to develop sustainable construction and building materials, various admixtures/additives such as nanomaterials (nanosilica, graphene materials, carbon nanotubes, etc.), recycled aggregate, manufactured aggregates, fibers, plastic wastes and crumb rubber, etc., can be added to the concrete or mortar. This will enhance the mechanical and durability performance of the concrete and also preserve natural resources, which is one of the keys to sustainability. Additionally, new binder materials such as alkali-activated materials, limestone calcined clay cement (LC3), and calcium sulfoaluminate will be good alternatives to cement in construction materials. This Special Issue is aimed at developing and sharing new trends in the production of sustainable construction and building materials utilizing different additives/admixtures. The Special Issue will focus on the development of sustainable concrete, mortar and bricks/blocks for use in building and construction. Potential topics include but are not limited to: Supplementary cementitious materials in concrete and mortar Geopolymer concrete and mortar Recycled aggregate concrete Concrete utilizing crumb rubber/plastic waste aggregates Alkali-activated materials Nanomaterials/Graphene nanomaterials in concrete LC3 concrete and mortar calcium sulfoaluminate concrete and mortar 11/22/2022 8:00:00 AM Researchers, Industry, Students

Influence on concrete properties like strength and durability with environmental sustainibility when OPC is partially replaced with Fly Ash, Silica Fume and a combination of Fly Ash & Silica Fume S&M Lab CE Journal Editorial Board Dr Musa Adamu Advances in Civil Engineering-Hindawi In recent days carbon foot print is one of the major concern globally & as per the available data, cement industries are alone producing more than 8% CO2 in the atmosphere. Thus so many research efforts are going on to reduce carbon foot print either by reducing the OPC cement consumption in concrete or by reducing CO2 from other industriies. In the present research work mostly the effort has been made to reduce the OPC from concrete by partial replacement of OPC with Fly Ash, Silica Fume and also combination of fly ash and silica fume at various proportions. Based on the research work it has been concluded that strength parameter of concrete like compressive strength & flexural strength has significantly improved with % of Fly ash 10 %-15 % and combination of 10% Fly ash with 5% Silica Fume and also combination of 15% Fly Ash & 10% Silica Fume. However on increasing the Silica Fume part beyond 10% adversely affecting the workability of concrete. On the other sides the durability of concrete with respect to RCPT, Sorptivity and Water permeability parameter of concrete are found significantly higher for concrete mix with a combination of Fly Ash and Silica fume as compared to concrete with only Fly Ash & normal OPC. Moreover by replacing OPC up to maximum 25% the global carbon foot print can also getting reduced by 25%. Consolidation Theory of Composite Layer in PVD - DMM Composite Foundation Based on Equivalent Annular Drain S&M Lab CE Journal Editorial Board Dr. Musa Adamu Advances in Civil Engineering-Hindawi The treatment technology of combined composite foundation of short PVD and long DMM has good application value in deep and soft soil, but there are few studies on its consolidation theory, and the research of consolidation theory has deficiencies such as assumptions that do not match with reality or over-simplified analysis. According to the characteristics of short PVD and long DMM composite foundation, on the basis of previous research results, this study provides the analytical model and solution of the consolidation theory of short PVD and long DMM composite foundation based on equivalent annular drain. Conclusions: (1) By introducing the principle of equivalent annular drain, adopting the modified flow equivalence assumption, and considering the disturbance effect, the consolidation theory of short PVD and long DMM composite layer is derived, and the analytical solution under arbitrary load is obtained.. With high calculation accuracy, the calculated consolidation degree matches well with the field monitoring; (2) The analysis results show that the calculated consolidation speed is slower than the existing solution, but it is more realistic for the effect of the conversion coefficient on the consolidation is considered. (3) It is more reasonable that the degree of consolidation calculated by the equivalent annular drain is closer to that calculated according to the equivalent method that is not conducive to drainage. 12/8/2022 8:00:00 AM Researchers, Industries, Students and Community

Bayesian method calibrating Multi-physics field parameters of hydro-thermo-salt-mechanics for saturated silty sand S&M Lab CE Journal Editorial Board Dr. Musa Adamu Advances in Civil Engineering-Hindawi Multi-physics field coupling theories can be used to simulate the dynamic artificial freezing process under complicated geological conditions, and describing the development of freezing temperature and freezing wall thickness. However, the physical-mechanical parameters of the soil have natural variability, if only uniformly parametric values are used, there is a large deviation between the predicted results and measurements. To this end, combined with laboratory test data and in-situ measurements, a stochastic mechanics based Bayesian method is employed to calibrate key physical-mechanical parameters, such as thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity, permeability coefficient and elastic modulus. Firstly, the coupled physical-mathematical equations of hydro-thermo-salt-mechanics are established based on Darcy's law, heat transfer in porous media, Fick's law and frost heave theory. Then, Markov Chain Monte-Carlo (MCMC) method is proposed. Finally, freezing silty sand is demonstrated of the connection aisle for Metro line 1 in Nantong, China. Key parameters are calibrated by the stochastic mechanics based Bayesian method, and evaluate the accuracies of posterior distributions. The commercial software COMSOL Multiphysics is utilized to predict the following temperature and displacement changes. The results show that the variability of key physical-mechanical parameters is reduced and the correlation is precise after the calibration. The numerical results are closer to the measurements, which can verify the effectiveness of the stochastic mechanics based Bayesian method. The calibrated physical-mechanical parameters can more truly reflect the mechanical properties of the soil, and can provide more accurate basic data for the design and construction of the artificial freezing method. 11/21/2022 8:00:00 AM Researchers, Industries, Students and Community

Study on Influence of Fly Ash Properties with use of Silica Fume on the Preparation of Concrete S&M Lab CE Journal Editorial Board Dr Musa Adamu Advances in Civil Engineering-Hindawi Fly ash is a waste product generated in coal based thermal power plant, wherein pulverized coal is burnt in furnace to produce steam to drive the turbine. In coal-based power plant the huge quantity of fly ash produced, sometimes being as much as 30 - 35 % of total coal burnt in a day. After introduction as a drive to make environment cleaner and sustainable, emphasis has been put by government to maximise consumption of thus produced fly ash in various appropriate fields viz. cement production, brick manufacturing, backfilling, cement replacement in concrete, etc, which has resulted in consumption of approximately 80% of the fly ash thus produced in coal- based thermal power plant across india. Still effort is needed to maximise usages of fly ash, which otherwise posing problems in its disposal owing to space constraint as well as threat to environment. In a drive to optimize the space utilization in India in commercial as well as industrial sector, high strength concrete is becoming the first choice for the designer/ architect, which offers slender sections of concrete. Thus, in order to explore the possibility to enhance the consumption of fly ash in the area, study was carried out on influence of fly ash along with usage of silica fume in characteristics of high strength concrete. Study indicates improvement in performance of concrete in terms of its compressive strength (by 12%), flexural strength (by 25%) and corrosion resistivity (by 10%) when fly ash and silica fume blended in optimum proportion (i.e. substitution of cement 20% by fly ash and 10% by silica fume). Analysis of necessity and feasibility for ground improvement in warm and ice-rich permafrost regions S&M Lab CE Journal Editorial Board Dr. Musa Adamu Advances in Civil Engineering-Hindawi Characterized by low bearing capacity and high compressibility, warm and ice-rich frozen soil is a kind of problematic soils, which makes the original frozen ground formed by of that unreliable to meet the stability requirements of engineering infrastructures and foundations in permafrost regions. With the design and construction of major projects along the Qinghai-Tibet engineering corridor (QTEC), such as expressway and airport runway, it is a great challenge to favor the stability of overlying structures by formulating the proper engineering design principles and developing the valid engineering supporting techniques. The investigations carried out in recent years indicated that warm and ice-rich permafrost foundations was widespread, climate warming was significant and the stability of existing engineering structures was poor, along the QTEC. When warm and ice-rich frozen ground is used as the foundation soil, the implementation of ground improvement is an alternative measure to enhance the bearing capacity of foundation soil and eliminate the settlement of structures during operation, in order to guarantee the long-term stability of the structures. Based on the key factors determining the physico-mechanical properties of frozen soil, an innovative idea of stabilizing warm and ice-rich frozen soil based on chemical stabilization is proposed in this paper, and then an in-situ ground improvement technique is introduced. This study intends to explore the feasibility of ground improvement in warm and ice-rich permafrost regions along the QTEC based on in-situ chemical stabilization, and provide the technical support and scientific reference to prevent and mitigate the hazards in the construction of major projects in the future. 1/31/2022 8:00:00 AM Researchers, Industries, Students and Community

Bearing Strength and Performance of Single Shear Joints of CFRP Composite Laminates Containing spread Tow Thin Plies S&M Lab CE Conference Dr. Tabrej Khan Universiti Putra Malaysia The development of spread-tow thin-ply technology, ultra-thin composite laminates could be produced. Composite bolted joints are commonly used on aircraft's load-bearing structures and it’s considered the main cause of stress concentration. The aim of this research is to investigate the single shear bolt joint properties of composite laminates that combines thin-plies and conventional thick-plies in a predetermined stacking sequence. The impact of thin-ply placement within the stack on bearing strength, including the onset of damages, was examined. The work involves mechanical tests as well as computer numerical analysis to understand the damage mechanisms of the plies and their interactions and reflect on the bearing load capacity of the joint for single shear bolt joint properties. The results showed an improvement in the bearing strength of up to 19% by inserting the thin-plies inside the laminate. 12/5/2022 10:00:00 AM
